Baby Rajan was born on a cold winter morning in answer to the ceaseless prayers and offerings from his parents.

A Child of Divine Grace: The Need for Clean Water

The winter had already begun to set in. On 22 January 2010, a tiny baby was born to Savita at home. They named him Rajan. He had taken after his mother—fair and rosy-cheeked. Shakuntala, Savita’s sister-in-law, would often say, “The little one is fairer than milk.”

Savita moved to Savda soon after Rajan was born. Her parents and family lived in the village, so only her mother-in-law came to look after her. For the first two months, Savita’s mother-in-law, Meera, took care of all the household chores. But when her husband fell ill, she had to return to her village. Since then, Savita has been managing everything on her own.

Today, the little one has been awake since five in the morning. Savita is sitting in bed, rocking Rajan in her arms under a quilt. Slowly, the fog is beginning to clear.

The little one drank his milk and went back to sleep. But Savita could not fall asleep again. She began tidying up the small things around the house. A few rays of light had begun to filter through the fog. She stepped out into the courtyard to sweep when suddenly a commotion spread through the lane and people began running with their buckets, gallons and containers. The water tanker sounded its horn. The women from the neighbourhood began calling out to her too, telling her to come and fill water.

For a moment, Savita simply tried to make sense of what was happening. Everything here was completely new to her. When her mother-in-law had been there, Savita had never realised how she managed everything. Savita spent the whole day inside the house looking after the little one; if the sun came out, she would sometimes just sit in the courtyard. She quickly placed four pillows around Rajan, shut the door and ran out with her containers.

The tanker came to the corner of the lane, about fifty steps from Savita’s house. Usually there was no fixed place where the tanker stopped. It served three or four lanes and could stop in front of any one of them. At times, the distance from her home could increase from fifty steps to nearly a hundred metres. Today, however, the tanker was right in front of the lane.

Women swathed in sweaters, shawls and mufflers, stood shivering in the bitter cold with their empty water cans. In summer, waiting for the tanker felt like playing in a water park; but in winter, this same place became Antarctica. In the scramble to fill their containers, everyone was getting splashed with the cold water, but Savita tried hard her to keep herself dry. As always, there was plenty of shouting and quarrelling around the tanker. Savita could not quite figure out how to get her container filled in the midst of the jostling. She managed to spot the women from her lane and placed her container alongside theirs. After some time, it was her turn, and Menaka, who was holding the pipe, filled Savita’s container. Since the bucket had no lid, the water overflowed from the top, ran down to her knees and fell onto her feet.

When Savita reached the courtyard, Rajan was crying. Still wet and shivering, she placed the water on one side of the courtyard and went into the bathroom to change her sari. She rubbed her palms together to warm them a little, applied some mustard oil, and then breastfed Rajan. “No, no, baby, Mummy is here. Don’t cry…” He was only three months old. Normally, a baby should be breastfed exclusively for up to six months, but because Savita was a little older, she was having trouble with this.

This was how Savita’s day began. She folded away the bedding and prepared Rajan’s bed. Today she had two buckets of water: one for her baby, and the other for household chores and drinking. In winter, they did not feel as thirsty, but the little one peed more often in the cold, so his cloth nappies had to be washed again and again. His clothes also had to be washed regularly. Babies catch infections fasters than others, so Savita had to be careful. Today, though, she had to be sparing with the water while washing clothes because there was so little of it. The sun had climbed overhead, bringing with it a little warmth. By the time she had finished all her work, it was nearly noon.

Today Savita decided to bathe the little one. For the last three days, she had only been wiping his hands and feet with a wet cloth. My little one’s complexion shouldn’t fade. He is as fair as the moon. Savita took a particular pride in Rajan’s fair complexion and his plump, round body. After all, the little one had been born after so many prayers, wishes and offerings.

Savita took off all of Rajan’s clothes. She placed a low wooden stool, near the threshold of her home and sat on it with her baby. She spread out her legs and placed him gently on them while she held onto his little body with her hands. She arranged warm water, small bottles of mustard and coconut oil, soap and a soft, velvety towel nearby. Gently, she poured water over his body, his head and then his feet.
“Will my little baby have a bath? My darling, beloved little one!”

Savita swiftly bathed Rajan, wrapped him in the cosy towel, laid him down on his fresh clean bed and ensconced him from all sides with pillows. She warmed the mustard oil over the flame and brought it over for his massage. By then, Rajan was moving his hands and feet and trying to wriggle out of the towel.
“No no, you will catch a cold baby.”

Half of Savita’s body was still wet. She made sure not to wet the upper part of her body as she held Rajan there. She was so wrapped in her baby that she hardly felt the cold herself. By the time she cleaned and massaged her baby, she would be left with very little time for herself.

Savita took Rajan out of the towel and laid him across her lap. She smeared the warm mustard oil in her palms and started massaging his little hands, neck, hands and chest. Rajan enjoyed his massage a lot. To massage his back, she turned him onto his stomach. Just then, he began to cry. Savita hadn’t noticed this while bathing him but she saw that he had some red marks and a boil on his back. Savita became anxious. She quickly picked Rajan up and laid him on the bed. She first put on a layer of thin clothes on him and then put on something thicker on top. Then she put on his socks, gloves, hat and wrapped him in a warm shawl. They were now ready to go to Sanju clinic near their house.

The doctor’s clinic was only two lanes away. Everyone from the surrounding blocks came to this clinic so the waiting room was crowded. Savita quickly entered the doctor’s room. There were other people inside too, including several mothers like Savita who seemed anxious as they held their children in their arms. She did not ask anyone anything; she simply waited restlessly for her turn.

The doctor barely looked at the child before asking, “What is it? Fever or a boil?”
She was surprised.
“Doctor sahib, how did you know?”
“Every day, mothers like you come here. By now, I can tell just by looking.”
The doctor told her that this was common. The dirty water here was causing problems for the children.
“I’ll give you a cream. Apply it when you massage him.”
“Doctor sahib, he’ll get better, won’t he?”
“Yes, he will get better. But the boils are bound to reoccur.”
“There is no treatment for it except clean water.”

Now, for Savita, arranging clean water was difficult. Holding her baby in her arms, she began thinking about arranging for clean water. Then it occurred to her that if she boiled the water properly, its impurities would be removed. The thought brought her a momentary sense of relief.
